![]() Drawing of myself playing viola, from ccho v2.0 |
Music is probably my longest-running hobby, as well as the most significant one to me.
Although it may sound strange, my love for and appreciation of music is not only aural but
tactile as well. It's somewhat difficult to explain exactly how it is tactile, but when
you play an instrument for most of your life which requires some physical exertion.
Accompanying the physical exertion is a certain amount of feedback which you connect to
the music itself. One example of this is that when I hear a familiar piece of music, my
response is to move my fingers to reach for the notes on an imaginary instrument as if I
were the performer. Another example might be a painful reaction to a sour note, where
the inside of my ear may ache. Some may find this behavior simulated, but that is really
how I feel about music.
I started on violin around the age of 3, and piano a few years later. Then I switched from violin to viola when I was about 11, and quit piano around that time. I also began music composition lessons when I was 15. If you would like to know about some of the activities I have been involved with, check the short music section (bottom) of my resume. Also, look at my archives page for some recordings of past performances. I found some pictures from freshman year in college of some chamber music groups that I was in and posted them below. |
